Don't just click LIVE! and a kick a** military care package trio!

My love for all things social media related is no secret. I am always reading, liking, blogging or tweeting!
My nature is to share and I find these outlets perfect for doing so. They do have their pitfalls though.

In many cases there is more "Media" and less "Social" and that has irked me a bit lately. After the death of a friend I felt like folks just clicked a like, jotted a "so sorry" and well....waited for the next news bite..... that a click on the like icon would save us all from disease or if you shared a pic surely you would prove that you loved God or were a supporter of whatever cause. I get it. We are all busy. But I thought...I need a "LIVE" button. LOL  I don't want to just like it...I want to live it! Experience it! Learn from it! I want to be sure that I am not posting or sharing to prove anything about my life........I am interacting with folks to enhance my life experience. So I wanted to share 2 recent activities where I did just that!!

1st up! The conquer your fear walk! If someone would have told me that a girl who is deathly afraid of heights and bridges would act as a support for someone else I would have said, get outta here! But I did!
A few posts of the beautiful scenery and a FB friend only (never met in person) wanted to conquer her fear and walk the 5 miles over the new Ocean City bridge and back. She had inspired me for months with her fitness posts, and green shake recipes, and good positive energy so I thought.....let's do it! Time, place, all details handled right on FB! We even had others chiming in. SOCIAL media at its best!

Tanya and Tara....FB Friends and beautiful ladies midway through a glorious walk ! Looking and feeling good and enjoying nature's beauty! Pic of one expanse of the bridge. Oh boy....she does look a bit intimidating!!
Next up! Care packages to Afghanistan! How does a person I have never met in person convince a cheapy (well, frugal) gal like me to spend my cash to send items to 3 people I have never seen or heard of? Easy.....start with calling me Miss Nicole! Ha! And live a life where you are not afraid to show love, and thoughtfulness, and delight for your wife and child. So inspired by Bryan Davis and his family I featured them on this very blog.....

He asked and well....I couldn't say no! Here are the details of the packages! Shipped today filled with lots of stuff and even more love! SOCIAL media and consciousness at its best!

  • 3 different soldiers serving in Afghanistan fighting for our country
  • A medium priority box is $12.35 to a military APO address. There is no weight limit on this so STUFF it to the brim!
  •  No pork, no porn, no bulk religious items (seems like a no brainer...who sends this type of stuff? Esp to folks you don't know!
  • Include a personal note and extra things to share with someone not fortunate enough to get a package
  • Non scented items (bugs) and nothing that will melt (heat)

Whatever way you choose to engage in the never ending and ever popular maze of social media....jump in sometime and let it spark some real action in you. Go to a restaurant you see a friend check in at, write a letter or make a sign for that politician you support, make a dinner for someone you learn online is sick, get up and DO something. Scroll through your social media pages.....but JUMP into life! Live it...don't just click "like" on it! Real talk peeps! Real talk! Follow me @realtalknic

No Sew Curtain panels for cheap? Sheeeeeet yeah!

With my list of projects growing and the budget shrinking....a girl has to work with what she has!

The guest room has been calling my name and well, it's the guest room so not exactly a priority when it comes to spending cash. I have been planning and pinning and it was time to start doing!

1st up was a new bed. I grabbed a day bed from Craigslist that included a trundle! This was a complete SCORE! With the amount of visitors we have, pulling that pop up trundle out has been a big huge help!
(tip: when the budget is low it is better to buy used than new. $100 would not get me a bed that would last if it got me a new bed at all................perfect condition daybed with trundle that will last for years to come from craigslist...$100)

Now that the bed is in I need some bedding. I want the guest room to be warm and inviting. The problem......all of those little things like curtains, and pillows add $$$$ to the budget that can be off putting. Grrrr.....What's a girl to do?

Fake it! Then, Make it! That's right........purchase the main items and then fake the rest. I say fake because I cannot sew................well, maybe I can but I do not even own a sewing machine! Ha!'s the breakdown!

I picked a yellow, grey and white color scheme. I went with a solid coverlet to give a couch like effect on the day bed. I bought the matching sheet set on a super low sale price knowing I would use the sheets for accessorizing and the cases for.....the pillows! heehee!

OK, curtain panels! One flat sheet, an iron, and hem tape! Woop! That's it! I went for a little ruffle to look less sheet like and I am pretty pleased with the results!
The trick is to use the hem that is already in the sheet as your rod holder! No sewing, quick and easy!

So easy! Finally.....I wanted an extra POP of this subtle print so I got adventurous! If I could do no sew curtains, why not a neck roll cover? And......well, I wanted that cute drawstring trim I had seen on the pricier ones. Ummm, and I don't want to sew. Ha! That's a tall order! Well, I bought the pillow itself for $4.99. That was good. Then I used the middle flat portion of the fitted sheet for the actual tube portion of the case. Then, in a really random, figure it out as I go method.....I used the elastic corner pieces to create the look I wanted! I LOVE LOVE LOVE the finished product! And all done with....................HEM TAPE! Woop!

Still need to paint, grab a rug, and lots of other things but the base is there and I no longer cringe when walking by when the door is open. When you want to add a pop on the cheap....go ahead and grab the scissors, and a sheet, and don't be scared! Waiting on perfect can put a complete stop to progress. Use what you have....real talk! Back to school basics! The 5 minute Bookcover

I don't know how it happened but......almost everyone I know is paper and scissor impaired. While I don't like admitting it, watching them do basic tasks causes extreme anxiety for me. LOL  Wrapping gifts? Oh no! I may start to twitch! Cutting items for school projects......Call Aunt Nicole for that! Heehee! Even my own offspring shock me with a lack of superior cutting skills! Must be a genetic defect!

Alas, while I do view cutting and wrapping as "must know" skills for being properly raised...HA! Your children should not have to suffer with jacked up book coverings because you lack skills! See below for quick (less than 5 minutes per book!) and cheap (can use brown bag from grocery!) fail proof method to cover books every single time! Now that deserves a double woop. WOOP! WOOP!
5 Minute Book Cover Instructions
1. I used solid craft paper rolls (red Christmas Wrap from January after Christmas Sale)
Pull off enough paper to cover book. Double the height and double the width with the book open
2. Using the book as your ruler crease the paper at the top and bottom the exact size of the book and fold
    on the creases
3. Open book and with book in the middle of paper crease at the edge of book, the fold at the creases
4. Gently slide front and back book covers into the folded slots
5. Tape inside flap to outside flap. Notice, tape never touches book, keeping the book in new condition
6. Inside flap can be used as folder and front can be decorated with stickers, markers, etc!

Now go ahead and get that extra credit by having your kids be the 1st in class with their books covered. Filling those parent forms out? Haven't figured a way out of that yet! Real talk. Follow me @realtalknic
